Underground Scholars in the News
Violeta Alvarez, USI directorRepresentatives of UC Berkeley's Underground Scholars Initiative, or USI, an organization that creates a pathway for formerly incarcerated and system-impacted individuals into higher education, came to speak to us at our club meeting on May 31. We heard from four speakers: Danny Murillo, David Maldonado, Violeta Alvarez (USI director) and Rodgrigo "Froggy" Vazquez (USI assistant director) as they shared how USI helped them and how they are helping others successfully navigate the challenges of higher education. They have been featured in the New Yorker as well as GQ (see links to those articles below). You can also read more on their website: http://www.undergroundscholars.org).

Berkeley Rotarians at the District Assembly
For those who missed it, several club members attended the District Assembly on Saturday, June 3. While we were there we learned about growing our membership, successful service projects, and FUNdraising, along with a few other topics. Pictured here are fifteen of the seventeen Berkeley Rotarians and two of the three Cal Rotaractors who attended the Assembly. Don't miss out next time!

Bubba Reminds Us About Burma Shave
For those who never saw any of the Burma Shave signs, here is a quick lesson in our history of the 1930's and '40s.  Before there were interstates highways, when everyone drove the old 2-lane roads, Burma Shave signs would be posted all over the countryside in farmers' fields. They were small red signs with white letters:  approximately five signs, about 100 feet apart, containing the lines of a 4-line couplet, and the obligatory last sign advertising Burma Shave, a popular shaving cream. Here are few to get us started. We'll post more in e-Rev from time to time to keep you smiling.
